Featured on September 20, 2007 ![]() Update on The Becel Toronto Ride for Heart and StrokeSunday, June 3rd marked the 20th anniversary of the Toronto Ride for Heart & Stroke. It was a great day, a wonderful event and a huge fundraiser. However, for my family and me, the day meant so much more. Our inspiration came from the courage and determination of Kevin Duffy – my older brother and a stroke survivor. It’s hard to describe the pride and emotion our family felt as we cheered Kevin on at the finish line. Kevin is a hero for me – in a day and age where heroes are hard to find. Most importantly, Kevin’s team raised close to $130,000 for stroke recovery – thanks to your generous donation. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your generosity and for your support. Sincerely,
Paul Duffy, President First Health CareFeatured on June 12, 2007 ![]() First Health Care proudly supports the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for HeartOn Sunday, June 3rd I’ll be participating in the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart in Toronto. This isn’t just any ride for me. This cause is very personal. In July of 2004, my older brother, Kevin Duffy, suffered a stroke at the age of 44. After spending three weeks in ICU and another four months in the hospital, he began his long journey to regain his life. With the support of his wife, children and other family members and friends, he’s spent thousands of hours in speech therapy and physiotherapy. It's working. He’s making progress every day. Kevin’s story is one of phenomenal courage and dedication as he relentlessly focuses on stroke recovery. But he isn’t stopping there. On June 3rd, Kevin will also be taking part in the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart in Toronto. He’ll be riding his customized bike and leading the "Kevin Duffy Ride for Stroke Recovery". He’s already training hard to get ready for the ride. And while Kevin’s story is encouraging, there are many others whose stories are less positive. So June 3rd will be a proud and emotional day for me as I join Kevin’s team. His fundraising goal is $50,000 for the ride and we’re asking colleagues and partner organizations to support us.
First Health Care will be donating a portion of all proceeds for the month of May to support Kevin’s ride. I’m hoping that you will support the Heart & Stroke Foundation. I know that it will make a difference in the lives of those affected by stroke.
Sincerely, Paul Duffy, President First Health Care Services of Canada Inc. Instructions on how to make your donationSecure online donations can be made with your credit card and an electronic tax receipt will be emailed to you. Featured on March 12, 2007 ![]() Spotlight on Acquired Brain InjuryNo Two People are exactly the same; No Two Brain Injuries are exactly the same By Tracie Shaw B.Sc., B. Sc. OT, Supervisor, Occupational Therapy Services, Sibley & Associates Inc.It’s hard to believe that all our cognitive skills and functions are associated with one single, little muscle, weighing only 3 pounds: the brain! With its billions of nerves, cells and blood vessels, the brain works by inter-relating all of its component parts. It’s fascinating to think that no two brains ever inter-relate their parts in exactly the same way. As individuals, no two brains are exactly the same. If you have ever handled a brain injury case, you are well aware just how inter-related these functions are because injury to a specific location of the brain may extend to many different parts of the brain. Treating brain injury often seems as complex as the brain itself! Having as much knowledge as possible about how brain injury is assessed and the anatomy of the brain can provide a solid foundation as the treatment of each brain injury client is as unique as the individual him/herself! Assessing Brain InjuryThe complex nature of brain injury necessitates the use of a range of assessment techniques, each appropriate for different circumstances: · Location of the lesion: all of our cognitive skills and functions are associated with different areas of the brain. Accordingly, depending on the location of the lesion, some assumptions can be made about the nature of the problems that your client may experience. · Observation: because the brain functions by inter-relating its component parts, a lot can be learned by observing your client’s day-to-day activities because his/her abilities and inabilities provide insight into the nature of the injury. · Imaging Tools: diagnostic procedures, such as CT scans (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) can also provide valuable information.A CT Scan creates computerized images of a combination of soft tissue, bone and blood vessels. For example, conventional x-ray imaging only shows the dense bone structures of the skull; X-ray angiography only shows the blood vessels of the head and neck and not soft brain-tissue; and MRI only shows soft tissue and blood vessels, but not the details of bony structures such as the skull. CT images reveal all of the soft tissue, bone and blood vessels as needed. Although MRI doesn’t capture bone, it is often helpful because of the in-depth level of detail visible in the images. Assessing Severity In addition to identifying the location of the lesion and observing the problems after the injury plus CT scans and MRIs, the severity of the brain injury is often predicted by the following assessments: Loss of Consciousness (LOC): is characterized by a “comatose state” or coma, where the client doesn’t exhibit vocal responses or movements after verbal or physical stimulation. The presence of LOC, particularly its duration, is a predictor that there may be future limitations, however, there aren’t always limitations or they may not be readily apparent. Retrograde Amnesia (RA): is the loss of memory of the events that happened right before the brain injury (i.e. the time span from the time of the injury to the last memory before the injury.). A long period of RA is usually an indicator of severe or extensive brain damage, however, in rare cases, RA may also occur with mild head injury. RA may occur without any LOC. Post Traumatic Amnesia (PTA): is the inability to form new memories, as well as disorientation for particular period after they recover consciousness. PTA may also be a good indicator of the severity of injury and the eventual functioning. Age is also a factor with PTA as older individuals tend to have longer periods of PTA. Observed Problems after Brain InjuryHopefully developing an understanding of the parts of the brain will help decrease its complexity in our own minds! Here is an overview of the parts of the brain and the problems that are often observed when each area sustains an injury: FRONTAL LOBE: It is the area right behind the forehead. While the rear three lobes of the brain are concerned with receiving and analyzing information, the frontal lobe of the brain is concerned with the output of all planned voluntary behaviour. It includes the following functions:· Determines how we know what we are doing (consciousness) · Initiates activity in response to our environment · Creates judgments about what occurs in our daily activities · Controls our emotional response · Controls our expressive language · Assigns meaning to the words we choose · Involves word associations · Memory for habits and motor activities Observed Problems: · Inability to plan and sequence the movements needed for multi-stepped tasks, such as making coffee (sequencing) · Loss of spontaneity in interacting with others · Loss of flexibility in thinking · Persistence of a single thought (preservation) · Inability to focus on tasks (attending) · Mood changes (emotionally labile) · Changes in social behaviour · Changes in personality · Difficulty with problem solving · Inability to express language (Broca’s aphasia) PARIETAL LOBE: It is near the back and top of the head and is responsible for perceiving, analyzing and assembling touch information from the body. It is also where visual, auditory and touch information combine to make sense of the world. It is involved in the following functions:· Some visual perception · Touch perception · Goal-directed voluntary movements (do we need to say “goal-directed?”) · Manipulation of objects · Integration of different senses, enabling understanding of a single concept Observed Problems: · Inability to attend to more than one object at a time · Inability to name an object (Anomia) · Inability to locate the words for writing (Agraphia) · Problems with reading (Alexia) · Difficulty with drawing objects · Difficulty distinguishing left from right · Difficulty doing mathematics (Dyscalculia) · Lack of awareness of certain body parts and/or surrounding space (Apraxia), leading to difficulty with self-care · Inability to focus visual attention · Difficulties with eye and hand coordination OCCIPITAL LOBE: It is at the back of the head and is responsible for vision. Observed Problems:
BRAIN STEM: It is the oldest and deepest part of the human brain and is responsible for primary life functions and arousal. It connects the brain to the spinal cord and includes the following functions deep in the brain leading into the spinal cord and is responsible for the following functions:
CEREBELLUM: It is at the base of the skull and is involved in the following functions:
An individualized approach to a complex issue As you know, brain injury can be devastating not only just to the injured client, but to all family members. The ramifications of each client’s brain injury are as unique as the individual and his/her specific life situation. Having a solid understanding of how brain injury is assessed and brain anatomy should be beneficial as you work in close consultation with a wide range of healthcare professionals. Additional information about this topic is available through the Sibley & Associates Resource Library and Educational Seminars.
